กริยา “รักษาศีล” ภาษาอังกฤษใช้ว่า to observe religious precepts ส่วนกริยา “ทอดกฐิน” ก็คือ to present robes to monks within a month after the end of the Buddhist Lent คนที่มีเพื่อนเป็นฝรั่งอาจจะเล่าให้ฟังว่า Thot Kathin Ceremony begins after The Asalhapuja Day at the end of the rainy season. ทอดกฐินเริ่มขึ้นหลังจากวันอาสาฬหบูชาซึ่งสิ้นสุดฤดูฝนThe Ceremony is held to supply the monks with robes and other things they need. เป็นประเพณีที่พุทธศาสนิกชนจะได้ถวายของใช้ที่จำเป็นแก่พระสงฆ์ เช่น จีวร และข้าวของต่างๆ ถ้าจะพูดถึง “กฐิน” หมายถึง “ไม้สะดึง” หรือ embroidery frame ที่ต้องเป็นไม้สะดึงเพราะในอดีตนั้น People used tosew the monks’ robes by hand using discarded materials they found in the jungle. ผู้คนเย็บจีวรให้พระด้วยมือโดยใช้ของที่ทิ้งแล้วซึ่งพบได้ในป่าเพื่อนฝรั่งของท่านอาจจะถามว่า ทำไมจึงต้องเข้าร่วมประเพณีทอดกฐิน ท่านอาจจะตอบว่า We want to gain merits. เราอยากได้บุญ“อาราธนา” ก็คือ “เชื้อเชิญ” แต่ใช้กับพระสงฆ์ เหมือนกับ “นิมนต์” = to invite อาราธนาธรรม to invite a monk to preach อาราธนาศีล to invite a monk reiterate the Preceptsเมื่อพูดถึง “สิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์” ก็ใช้ว่า sacred power หรือ sacred powersพระที่ต้องการพูดว่า “สาธุชนทั้งหลาย” กับคนต่างชาติ ก็พูดได้ว่า “My good people” ครับ.ศัพท์ทางความเชื่อและศาสนา (1)นิติการุณย์ มิ่งรุจิราลัยpasalok1998@gmail.com
