อัรฮาม (Arham) อยากซื้อน้ำให้เพื่อนสาวจึงพูดว่า Please allow me to buy you a drink. โปรดให้ผมซื้อน้ำให้คุณนะครับ ผู้อ่านท่านครับ พูดอย่างนี้ สุภาพและเป็นทางการมากไปนะครับ ค่อนข้าง “polite and formal” การพูดกับเพื่อนหญิง ควรพูดว่า Let me buy you a drink. จะดีกว่า เพราะให้ความรู้สึกเป็นมิตรและไม่เป็นทางการจนเกินไป
ฝรั่งพูด allow me “to” buy แต่พูดว่า let me buy ที่เป็นอย่างนี้ เพราะโครงสร้างของ let คือ let + กรรม + infinitive without to
Allow คือ “อนุญาต” permit ก็คือ “อนุญาต” สองคำนี้ใช้อย่างค่อนข้างเป็นทางการ และตามด้วยกรรม + infinitive เช่น We do not allow people to sing in the room. เราไม่อนุญาตให้คนร้องเพลงในห้อง หรือ Wedo not permit people to sing in theroom.
แต่ถ้าละ “กรรม” ก็สามารถให้ permit และ allow + V-ing ได้เลยนะครับ We do not allow singing in the room. หรือ We do not permit singing in the room.
Permit กับ allow นี่ ฝรั่งนิยมใช้เป็น passive voice กันเยอะ People are not allowed/permitted to sing in the room. หรือจะใช้ singing นำหน้าประโยคก็ได้ Singing is not allowed/ permitted in the room. แต่ถ้าเมื่อใดก็ตามขึ้นต้นด้วย it ก็มักจะใช้กับ permit ครับ...✔...It’s not permitted to sing in the room. ...✘... It’s not allowed to sing in the room.
บางประโยคใช้ได้แต่เพียง allow ไม่สามารถใช้ permit ได้ เช่น Rhonda wouldn’t allow me in. รอนด้าคงไม่อนุญาตให้ผมเข้าไปข้างในดอกครับ.
